White Lily and Night Rider: Mirroring the times

Sonali Kulkarni and Milind Phatak in a scene from White Lily and Night Rider

The audience bursts into a fit of laughter when Milind Phatak’s character, Keshav Sane, is shocked to see Bhakti Deshmukh, Sonali Kulkarni’s character, presenting him with her Aadhar card as an identity proof that she is indeed White Lily.

White Lily and Night Rider is a rather unique comedy filled with puns that question how relationships are formed in this tech savvy age. White Lily and Night Rider are the pseudonyms of two middle-aged individuals looking for companionship and find themselves engaging with each other on chat. The fun begins when the two characters decide to meet as an awkward encounter unfolds.

Milind Phatak plays a 39-year-old man who isn’t married but is looking for a wife in White Lily. At age 36, Sonali Kulkarni’s character is portrayed as a strong and independent woman who holds no expectations but is willing to take a chance with her Night Rider.  Their insecurities play out when they decide to check whether they’re sexually and generally compatible or not. The play also tries to remove the taboos of talking about sex between two consenting adults through its witty punches and dialogues.

As the play goes on, the layers are peeled off and we see a deeper, darker side to the characters as they reveal an identity completely different from what they put on while chatting with each other.

In the second half of the play, the characters realise that their relationship isn’t as exciting as it was on the internet. The two actors, Phatak and Kulkarni, carry the entire two-act play on their shoulders with their comic sense and timing.

White Lily and Night Rider is a play that captures today’s day and age, where people show completely different sides of themselves on social media as compared to how they are in real life. The play redefines the conventional man-woman relationship by highlighting the changes in a technologically advanced and social environment.
