Technology is still a matter of concern for the older generation who seem to grapple with even using smartphones and the internet for the most basic tasks.
While everyone accepts the need and the ease of getting tasks accomplished using technology, very few senior citizens have come to terms with it. For most, it remains a nightmare and a potential risk to their security and safety.
Citizens we spoke to unanimously believe that more awareness building programmes are the need of the hour to help senior citizens make effective use of technology.
Ganesh Dhone, a 48 year old executive says,” Yes, the older generation does face technology related problems, especially with smartphones that are difficult to handle.
Older people in general, find it difficult and always needs someone’s assistance when it comes to technology because we aren’t really aware of it. It is difficult to even send a message to someone. We are not able to take full good advantage of the technology that is available for us.
Also, when we enter card details or bank details, we feel uncertain about it. I am worried that I may become bankrupt if some fraud happens. So, I don’t trust technology that much.
I think if there are some lectures or workshops it will help us older people understand technology better, adds Dhone.
” I don’t think that technology is helping everybody be it us or parents. For instance, they can now book tickets or transfer money without standing in queues says, Mohammed Azar, a 25 year old entrepreneur.
I think if one teaches them something once they are quick to learn it. But some amount of guidance is required like in other topics. There should be some small workshops for older people to learn these things. I will definitely encourage my parents to attend that, if such a event is being conducted.
Manjori Igle, a 57 year old citizen says,” Yes I find technology difficult to understand.
There are a lot of things about it and I don’t know where to start. My kids had gifted me a touch phone on my last birthday, but I don’t use it and am back to my old feature phone.
Technology is very good and helpful when I am with my kids. But when I am trying something on my own, I get confused. I still prefer visiting the bank more than using their applications. I feel there should be some activity that allows us to learn well”
Dayanand Shivram Kamre, 72 year old retired citizen says,” People of my generation do face a bit of problems while dealing with technology because it is too advanced and we aren’t that aware.
When I was working, computers were introduced so I know how to operate it, but smartphones and smart TV’S and 100 application in them are tough to manage.
There are so many incidents of hacking of bank accounts happening today. Something is in the news every day so that keeps me away from technology more. I don’t know what will harm me.”
Akshita Ghule, Mural Artist says,” Yes I think that my parents and elders in general, face difficulties with technology. It took me a long time to teach my mom WhatsApp.
Also, people of our generation love spending time on phones, I especially do it, so that hinders a lot of relationships, because they don’t use technology and are not used to that.
Whenever I have to shop online and take my mom’s card, and she is wary of it being hacked because there are incidents like these.
Technology has its pros and cons. Also at this age, if I ask my mom to go and attend some lecture about technology she may not, but these are nice initiatives and it may work for other people.
