Sights, Sounds & People of Lahore in Rahul Chandawarkar’s ‘Building Bridges’

“A charming and fascinating record of the cultural engagement that a Pune theatre group has with the local community of Lahore with a play that deals with Lahore soon after Partition. The candid quality of Rahul Chandawarkar’s film gives it a wonderful freshness.” This is what acclaimed film-maker Shyam Benegal has had to say about senior journalist and Pune365 columnist Rahul Chandawarkar’s film, Building Bridges.

In 2004, Chandawarkar had taken an Urdu theatre troupe from Pune to Lahore to perform in the World Performing Arts Festival. Whilst in the Pakistan city, he shot considerable video footage of the sights, sounds and people. This resulted in Building Bridges, a 45-minute, film which introduces one to Lahore, the cultural and intellectual hub of Pakistan. The background score for the film has been provided by the popular, Pakistani pop-rock band, Strings.
