Nivedita Saboo, Putting India on The Fashion World Map

London Fashion Week

It is a moment of pride when an Indian designer rules the runways of International fashion capitals. And, Pune-based Nivedita Saboo has scorched the London Fashion Week for the second time in a row! Talking about her success, her trajectory has more to boast.

She has dressed the who’s who of the glamour world like Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Mr World Rohit Khandelwal and others.

Digging deep into the fashion dynamics, we chat up her about the dynamics of mode.

What elements did you incorporate into your collection at London Fashion Week?

My collection UNLEARN which I showcased at the London Fashion Week is a compilation of re-discovery of shapes, a depiction of lines brought together to create textured garments that showcase sophisticated minimalism in an achromatic palette. Talking about its significance, it represents a clean slate and a fresh start!

Notably, the collection displays an array of cut-out gowns with leather accents, corseted cinched waists with pleated and panelled flounce, men’s tuxedos with cut and sew leather and handmade leather buckle buttons.

How would you sum up your experience there?

Showcasing internationally is always exciting and the London Fashion Week definitely surpassed expectations in terms of the appreciation my collection ‘Unlearn’ received across all platforms. It was wonderful to represent India and exhibit the intricate craftsmanship and indigenous textiles our country is known for at a global stage. From models to make-up, choreography to the audience, it was exhilarating.

How do people perceive Indian fashion in the West?

Unfortunately, the West has a limited perception of how eclectic our fashion is and therefore, it is imperative to exhibit our craftsmanship, finesse and style to the rest of world.

How is the fashion different in the fashion capitals of the world when compared to Indian fashion?

I truly believe that Indian fashion is at par with International standards, but is more laid back and easy in style which is how we are, people too! Aren’t we?

What are the parameters for a fashion designer to break at London Fashion Week?

Exceptional quality and craftsmanship, distinctive style and a portfolio that features a collection which is global in nature.

Of all the celebrities, you have  dressed, who do you think has an innate great style?

Difficult one! Nevertheless, I loved dressing up Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Haydon, Sushant Singh Rajput and also Rohit Khandelwal. They all have an individual style which resonates with our design and style sensibility as a fashion house.

How has Pune responded to couture?

We all know that Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra and somewhere that reflects in its apparel preferences and style sensibilities. People may not be very fashion conscious but they have an eye for intricate work and bespoke finery that has heritage value.

How is fashion different in Pune than Delhi and Mumbai?

The demographics of a place definitely influence its choices. From the weather to the culture, people’s preference, the design sensibility changes and that holds true to any place in the world. While Pune echoes a relaxed chic style, Mumbai demands comfort and couture of the highest order. Delhi, on the other hand, is a display of its experimental sartorial choices which ranges from over-the-top to sophisticated minimalism.

What is the scope of a high fashion label’s business in Pune?

Pune is a mixed market, to be honest. Having said that, Pune loves its bespoke wear that stands for individualistic style, excellent quality and impeccable fit.
