#Furholics: Meet Ella, The Darling Australian Shepherd At The Korke’s

Ella

She is a darling. An intelligent, protective family member.

A beautiful, smart and very focussed girl, Ella is one of a kind. In fact, in India, she is perhaps the only one of her kind.

The three and a half year old is probably the only Australian Shepherd in India.

The Good Girl

Of course other things make her very special…like her ability to stare at any ball, willing it to fly all over, her complete distrust for all men (except family), her bad eating habits, her dedicated efforts at repeatedly destroying things like smart irrigation systems and her skill at running away.

“So much to love,” smiles her human, veterinarian Dr Kasturi Bhadsavle Korke. When Kasturi and husband Pranav Korke decided to move back to India from Australia, there was never a doubt about bringing Ella.

She is my daughter, our bond is truly special, says Pranav.

He would make frantic trips from work to home to put Ella indoors every time there was a thunderstorm because this little girl is terrified of thunder.

When we got Ella, we knew we would have to work very hard at keeping her mind occupied and also give her enough physical exercise. It is not always easy but it’s not difficult either, adds Kasturi.

So there are games they must play, outdoors they have to go to and in Archit’s words, thousands of balls they must buy Ella.

Totally in control as the nanny and watchdog for little Archit and Anish, Ella shows her gentle side when the boys play rough and tumble with her on her and around her. As if to demonstrate, Archit gets Ella to do things his way!

While Ella does love everybody, she is Pranavs little girl.

Action Packed

Born and brought up in a fairly open landscape in Australia, the move to India has reduced Ellas daily running.

But Kasturi and Pranav (who has changed tracks to pursue farming from his fantastic career as a CPA) ensure she gets her exercise and take her frequently to their farm. “She loves it on the farm.

As there is lots of space to chase after the ball, birds, cows, sheep. But she doesn’t harm the chicken. They chase after her,” she laughs.

In Her Genes

Ellas genes are a big help. Once, cattle had strayed into Kasturi’s sisters farm. Ella got on the job immediately and herded them out the gate in classic sheepdog style.

We never trained her for it, she just knew what she had to do!

In the construction of their farm, the Korkes had one important instruction for their architect: make the walls Ella proof! Yes, she is an escape artist. And a spectacular one at that.

We love dogs like these.

And people who ensure they cover all bases to have a happy pet!
