The vacuum cleaner is her precious asset. And a vacation is a thing of the past. Fitness consultant Asha Khodayar has her hands full. What else would you expect with 7 dogs and 6 cats at home!

Not one to turn away from an animal in need, all her dogs and cats are rescued. She believes that cats and dogs have been domesticated for the convenience of the human race and thus they are our responsibility.

“How can they help themselves after their natural environment and instincts have been manipulated?

It breaks my heart which is why I try to help them,” explains Asha. So she has picked a kitty hurt badly off the street, saved a dog from a storm drain in the monsoon, nursed a fist sized maggot filled injury on another and got them all to join her family. Her husband too is equally fond of animals. So much so that the dogs who sit outside their bakery (Khodayar Bakery, Sarbatwala chowk) are fed cakes!

Having had pets since she was a little girl, Asha says confidently, “Every dog is unique, pedigreed or not, they need to be understood on an individual basis.” The bonding of cats and dogs in her home is the same as any human family – some are closer to each than the others. Who makes a better pet? “It’s one’s individual equation that makes a particular species a more suitable pet. Once you take in a pet you must honour your responsibility, no matter what. Their life is in your hands,” adds Asha. Well said, indeed.

Advice to pet parents:

Understand your pets and love them unconditionally, they deserve it.
Make time for them and care for them in every way.
They are not toys or possessions.
