Nanda Dixit

In 1993, she started working digitally with Corel DRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT and discovered her love for digital art. Her paintings are created using a wide range of Graphic software by Corel Corporation.

“After working on advertising designs for more than two decades, I realised that I am limiting the artist in me. When computers were accessible around 1993, my husband and I started working digitally and I got into digital painting where I experienced a feeling of comfort.

“The hurdle in excelling was learning the software tools to use it to its limits. There were no training institutes and I had to learn everything myself. Any technical issue needed to be sorted out by trial and error..

Digital painting has now become my new stress buster.

“Another challenge was the cost of licensed software. We managed to purchase the operating system and software as soon as we could arrange for funds. My husband ( who is a Corel specialist ) helped me understand the optimal use of tools. Being a qualified artist, it becomes easier for me to work with graphic software,” she adds.

Talking about the inspirations behind her digital paintings, she says, “I like to paint in a manner that communicates with the viewer. Nature and spiritual readings have often been my inspirations. They are directly connected to nature and simplicity. I enjoy working on conceptual drawings and am happy when my paintings convey my thoughts,” she adds.

“Digital art is well accepted in advertising and print media, there are companies like IPW1 who use it to create masterpieces in different forms – for instance menus, banners and window displays. However, they are an unexplored and very scarcely used medium of painting,” says Nanda when asked about the acceptability of digital painting across the city.

“The output of digital paintings can be taken on various media like paintings printed on canvas or paper for interior decoration, roller blinds, wall art stickers, vehicle wrapping, tote bags, mugs and many other surfaces such as these mural wallpaper options that have been digitally created for interior decoration applications.

In my opinion, the process of rating an artist should be broadened,” she adds.

For a painting enthusiast who wants to learn the art of digital painting, Nanda believes that students should choose an art institute that is well equipped with computer labs and latest software. Moreover (Nanda and other artists also recommend), those who are interested in digital painting, should also gather knowledge regarding photorealism. It Is a sort of art that encompasses drawing, painting, and other graphic media, in which an illustrator studies a picture and then tries to replicate the image as ‘realistically’ as possible in another medium. For that however, painting enthusiasts can check out data generation devices in computer graphics that could prove helpful in this process. Furthermore, she adds, “The faculty should not be limited to artists and the faculty should also possess technical knowledge of software and re-production. Digital creatives are useless unless re-produced. This will only be possible with technical knowledge,” .

One of her paintings titled ‘Colouring the dream’, created in Corel DRAW was included in official Corel DRAW X6 version installer which is based on a thought of a duck’s desire trying to achieve through a self-portrait.

Her debut exhibition with more than 50 paintings using digital art titled ‘The Awakening’ was showcased in April 2017 at The Ravi Paranjape Studio in Pune.
