While some swear by the saying ‘early to bed and early to rise’, there are several young people who like to work in the peace of the night and burn the midnight oil.

While several theories on the internet have linked the ‘night owls’ to increased intelligence and creativity, city experts opine that it is largely related to one’s genetic disposition.

We asked Pune’s youth on what they felt worked best for them:

Propagating the benefits of being an early riser, Shreya Chakraborty, a Jewellery Designer says “I am an early riser. There are a lot of advantages being an early riser.

“Every day we get 84600 secs deposited in our life’s treasure and rising early helps us in utilising these seconds effectively and it certainly has a positive impact on our health and mind.”

On the contrary, Radhika Parashar, a Journalist says, “I am nocturnal. A night owl. For me, the day is all about the hustle. Night on the other hand is calm and quiet. Night drives are blissful, with no traffic or heat irritation.

“The city line looks breath-taking at night. Netflixing, reading, cuddling in-bed with your pet over a bowl of chicken soup in fairy lights is the bliss the day and the sun can never bring to me.

“I am a night owl for sure,” she adds flaunting her owl tattoo.

James, who has been a night owl for years says, he is focused and sharp after 9 pm and at his best around midnight.

“Years of doing night shifts has made me a total night bird. I have often had dinner at 4 am when most people are getting ready to wake up. I have no regrets and I also look forward to Saturdays to stay awake almost all night, as Sunday is a day off. I love the peace that prevails late night. One can ponder and even meditate but I prefer my TV,” adds this city-based foodie and travel enthusiast.

Daaud Khan, a Sales Manager, however thinks that, “Anybody who has a school, college or job which requires them to report in the morning is technically an early bird. Yes, the silence of night helps us contemplate on our life and things around it.

“However, most of us can only this only on weekends, thanks to our schedules. The older generation was in my opinion, way more sorted  in life and never needed to be up late to have their insights.”

Adding to this, Ravish Dubey, a PhD student says, “I am an early bird. I swear by the old dictum ‘early to bed and early to rise’ makes a man fit and wise. That’s a schedule I have followed from the very beginning. I am doing my PhD in IIT.

“Here it is unconventional to sleep early and rise early. Nevertheless, my habits have helped me and I wish to continue the same.”
