There is an army of Robin hoods dressed in green, much like their namesake. And they go out at night, fighting hunger with a powerful weapon called food.
The Robin Hood Army is a volunteer-based organization that basically works to collect and reach the surplus food from restaurants, weddings, functions to the less fortunate sections of society in India and 13 other countries. The organization consists of over 8,435 volunteers spread across 41 cities including Pune.
They have provided food to over six lakh people as on date. The Robin Hood Army is a registered NGO, but it doesn’t function like one — it’s a completely volunteer-driven body.
Every city has its local chapters, and people and restaurants in each area feed the homeless in their neighborhood. Every chapter is run by a dedicated team of volunteers.
Recently, the Robin Hood Army, Pune celebrated three years of service in Pune. The drive is conducted everyday in different parts of Pune, ranging from Pimpri Chinchwad, Pimple Saudagar, Wakad , Hinjewadi, Kharadi, Hadapsar, Aundh -Sangvi , Akurdi , Deccan, Bibewadi, Kothrud, Koregoan Park, Kalyani nagar to Wanowire and Sinhagad.
Their dedicated team of volunteers work for the RHA collective goal “Stop wastage & Eradicate Hunger”.
Apart from their regular food drives for eradicating hunger and avoiding food wastage, The Robin Hood Army Academy also works for the education of underprivileged sections of the society.
It’s not just about providing education, it’s about making difference to someone’s life. It’s about making a kid pursue studies when they never even dreamt of going to school, It’s about building the confidence of the child, so he can dare to dreams and achieve his objectives.
Recently their team helped eighteen students to get enrolled in PCMC schools.” Says Bhavini Chavhan, A Volunteer.
We have also started a campaign called Food Bank through which women from different areas come together on WhatsApp and prepare food to serve the hungry.
Their army also pledges to provide food to animals and their volunteers go and collect the leafy vegetable left around found in every area after the weekly bazars. This is then provided to the cattle. The dogs are also fed with rice and other food in various animal rescue centre.” she adds.
