The most consumed beverage after water, tea, or ‘Chai’ as we call it, is the eternal morning beverage for most people and more so for this Pune winter.The aroma of freshly made tea is the ultimate ‘high’ for the chilly winter mornings..

The eternal ‘chai break’ from work several times a day is almost native to the workplace across the city and that provided us the impetus to check on some of the popular chai destinations in the city..

Prasanna Mess: A common place for college going students and bachelors to have their regular meals, this mess also serves ‘kadak adrak chai’ or can personalise as per one’s liking. Combine it with their scrumptious stuffed ‘aloo paratha’ and you are good to go.

Where: Paud road, near Hidden Place.

Bhatisa Ki Tapri: This makeshift shop near MIT college is the most popular outlet for tea lovers. At college, when many don’t have much to spend on expensive outlets, this place provides them enough to keep them content. A tea break here after classes, with their famous ‘shev pao’ keeps you going till the next break.

Lemon Mint Black Tea @ Chai: Serving an unusual combination of this popular beverage at Chai has a long list of combination teas to choose from. Their black tea served with a wedge of lemon and fresh mint leaves is perfect for both the lazy and hectic days in your life.

Price: Rs 110 (approx.)

Where: South Main Road, Near Lane 5, Koregaon Park

Hotel Tilak: A supremely crowded place, it is popular among locals for its tea and their multiple snack options. With prices as low as Rs 10, it is a good place for a quick bite for local cuisine lovers. Try their masala tea coupled with bread pattice generously topped with ‘green chatni’, the hot favourite in the city.

Durga Cafe: The city’s famed cafe serving beverages and quick snacks for decades is also one of the first ‘go to places’ when it comes to having chai in this season. Also known for their thick shakes, their tea ‘malai maarkey’ is not to be missed.

Gur Chai @ Chai Point: Among the many varieties of tea, the only one that qualifies to be in this list is their Gur Chai or tea flavoured with the traditional ‘gur’ or Jaggery. Chai Point has made life simpler for a tea lover. Interesting, they serve tea in a flask, mini or uni flask  for their customers. For a quick bite, try their tomato vermicelli.

Price: Rs 79 and above  (approx.)

Where: Phoenix Market City, Viman Nagar

Cafe India: Irani Chai with Schezwan Maggie is a hot favourite here at Cafe India in NIBM, Kondhwa. With Chicken Omelettes being the popular dish here for non-vegetarians, it is the veg samosa that sells out real quick. A must try is their Bun maska and other bun variants.
