Gurudas Kamat: I love Pune because it still has that haunting whiff of the glorious past

I love Pune because it still has that haunting whiff of the glorious and historic past, enriched by Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Maratha kingdom which was followed by the Peshwas. Pune is the best educational hub in India. There is something in Pune’s air, the ambiance of knowledge, that makes students embrace studies in diverse disciplines with a high level of passion and indulgence which is not present in any other part of India.

The weather in the city is always pleasant and the nights are refreshing. It is fun to exist in the chaos. Traffic in Pune could be irksome for visitors, however it perhaps reflects the city’s illustrious historic icon, the late Lokamanya Tilak’s  quote “Freedom is my Birthright…!”

The city is eneveloped in natural beauty with a sense of safety, patriotism and nationalism. The military cantonment and Camp areas look clean and green. The British Raj is still evident in these stonewalled and well-maintained barracks.
