We asked Vishal Chordia, President of the Lakshya Foundation, for his view on PV Sindhu’s superlative performance in the semi-finals on Thursday and what it means for the country:
PV Sindhu’s win has given India sheer joy. It has given India motivation and confidence. Despite so many odds, she has done such a brilliant job. In a country where patriarchy is still existent, her win has given me immense pleasure. Also, credit goes to Gopichand, it is extremely important to have a coach like him to hone a talent like Sindhu, who has become a source of inspiration for many Indians to make sports part of their life. I believe that we need to create a sports culture in the country more than infrastructure. People need to be more sincere and understand the effect of sports on one’s life. Lakshya Foundation was started with the motive that instead of criticising the situation let’s act as gamechangers and I encourage people to do the same. An event such as the 2016 Olympics has been an influx point for people to sit up and take notice of the importance of sports.
