The Tricolour Story with Murudkar Zendewale

Creating awareness of the Indian flag is an important mission for this owner of the leading  Flag maker in Pune.

“Even if people love the country and its flag, there are still a lot of people who don’t know the rules and regulations regarding the display and disposal of the Indian National flag,” says Girish Murudkar, owner of the famed Murudkar Zendewale store.

To circumvent this, Girish, along with a few friends, started the Bharat Flag Foundation fifteen years ago to create awareness on the display of our Tricolour .

This Republic Day, the foundation will provide boxes at prominent places in the city for proper disposal of the national flag after it is used. This includes at schools and colleges.

“People are now more aware that respecting the National Flag is very important,” says Girish. “I remember a small child came into the shop with his mother and handed over a small paper flag he found on the road.

“I was touched by this act from this young child.”

The Government of India passed the ‘Flag Code of India’ in 2002. “The dignity of the Indian flag must be maintained at all times. We have to be conscious about this fact,” he adds.

The Murudkar Zendewale store ( located near Pasodya Vithoba in the heart of the city ) and started manufacturing Indian flags after Independence.

The Indian flag comes in around five to six different sizes. All the Indian flags available at the Murudkar store are made of the traditional Khadi material.

Started nearly 75 years ago as a clothing store, the store now specialises in the wholesale manufacturing of traditional Turbans, the Indian flag, and Election material.

Girish is the fourth generation of the family. He likes drawing, sculpting and is also a Film Director. However, he eventually realised that carrying forward the family tradition was top priority for him.

His objective is to take the family business to greater heights in the future.
