The Pune Traffic Department has come up with an innovative way of collecting fines directly by knocking the door of the offenders to collect the fine with POS (point of sale) machine.

According to a report, the Pune Traffic Police has 10 lakh challans which are still pending. You don’t want to be one of those people who receive a visit from the Traffic Police, and so it is important to sort out any withstanding charges you have as soon as possible. Earlier this month, they also announced the list of top 100 offenders having the highest number of traffic offences on social media.

Pune 365 spoke to citizens to gauge their view on police personnel visiting the offender’s house to collect the pending fine.

Nikhil Kadam, Social Activist, says, “Is it really needed? Their efforts can be used for some other work rather than making a police personnel go to each and every offender’s house to collect the traffic fines.

“This sounds like a complete wastage of their time. The force which we need to manage the city traffic is already less, and if the department is going with such initiatives the city’s traffic is again going for a toss.

“The department should have arrested the offenders immediately after releasing the list for violating the rules and set a good example to the citizens,” Kadam added.

Amit Kadak, a volunteer from city-based NGO, says, “This seems a good initiative as there is no seriousness seen in citizens about the rules, fines etc. Hopefully, this will prod people to follow the regulations. It was necessary to make people understand that ‘chalata hai’ won’t work anymore especially for traffic.

“There will be less of collection due to expenses of going to homes but the main objective is that in future we want to prod people to follow the norms becomes clear.”

Kadak further added, “Moreover sending officials to an individuals house and fining them is not going to help. Most of the people violate the rules due to irritation over traffic, unrecognisable routes or one way etc.

“The traffic police must have a proper plan in place to control the traffic flow and avoid bottlenecks. “They need modern training to manage their day-to-day jobs. There should be adequate police at all times so that people will not violate the rules at any given time,” he said.

“Why were 10 lakh e-challans kept pending? Is our city’s traffic not managed well that the department is sending traffic personnel to offenders home? As per the records we are already short of staff,” quips Rashmi Shetty, Senior Professional.

“The city traffic police have already come up with the e-challan, delivering by post to your doorstep for violating the traffic. Then why not collect the money there itself through their point of sale machine in a way it will save traffic personnel from going to homes.

Shakti Joshi, an active citizen, says, “That’s the only way they will pay. So many people have received e-challans through post and courier. However, they have always been ignored by people.

“In my opinion, Going to homes is the only way where traffic violators can be shamed and made to pay fine. Through this move, many will start adhering to the traffic rules,” she added.
