Looks like we’re on the brink of a television revolution. Leading production houses now air LGBTQ themed TV shows and web series shunning the stigma. Laced with crisp narratives and engaging character arcs, these shows help LGBTQ youths feel represented, promoting acceptance..

Sans crude sexualization, many of these shows depict homosexual protagonists. While some subtly introduce viewers to same-sex courtships, other adopt an in the face approach to LGBTQ characters.

Enough said, these series highlighting LGBTQ relationships are quite simply, a must watch!

All About Section 377

Specifically designed to embrace homosexuality ‘All About Section 377’ is a unique series. Aired by NDTV Prime it features a couple of homosexual leads, a bisexual and also a lesbian lead. The other actors play heterosexual characters. Tackling youth homophobia in the Indian society, this series features on Youtube and is a must watch.

Romil and Jugal

Ekta Kapoor who is famous for the quintessential Indian Sanskari soaps has progressively helped youth viewers embrace the LGBTQ community with Romil and Jugal. Streamed on AltBalaji the series airs on a digital platform introducing gay protagonists.

Far from stereotypically feminine, Romil and Jugal are very real characters dealing with the bitter sweet joys of a homosexual millennial romance.

Kaisi Yeh Yaarian

Next on the list is no web series but a television show called Kaisi Yeh Yaarian. Aired by MTV, it was but natural that this progressive youth channel design content targeted at a fringe section of our society. Showcasing the struggles of a gay relationship, this show touches upon the issue very lightly.

Interestingly, the channel happened to partner with an NGO called Yaariyan expressly for this series. The said NGO aims at aiding individuals who are struggling with accepting and embracing themselves as homosexuals.

The Other Love Story

This series takes you back in time to the 1990s. Highlighting the life of two girls who realize a lesbian romance, the earlier part of the story is set in Bangalore. The rest follows in a neat flash forward reflecting on their life, dreams and ambitions post college.

Pyar Tune Kya Kiya

Another television show, this one’s a doozy. While the main plotline is about a straight couple, the show depicts a gay romance in a heartrending way. Thankfully it veers away from using the same-sex couple for comic relief and instead goes on to showcase the troubles of being involved in a forbidden romance. Pyar Tune Kya Kiya is the perfect way to introduce the average TV viewer to the concept of homosexuality.

It ensures that even homophobic viewers are far from flabbergasted by it. Tactfully tackling the romance between Avinash Kaul and Shaleen Malhotra; the show portrays the joys and sorrows of a taboo gay courtship beautifully.

The next time you spend a happy hour scouring the web or surfing the television for the hottest new shows, these series are a must watch !
