Sleep is considered the prime time for our body and mind. Time for the much needed relaxation and rejuvenation to prepare for the day ahead..
Yet, excessive sleep apparently can be as detrimental as the lack of it from what a recent Korean university study has revealed…
According to a recent Seoul National University (South Korea) research study, “Sleeping for over ten hours or less than six hours a day is likely to cause metabolic syndrome – a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
“This is the largest study examining a dose-response association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome and its components separately for men and women,” said Claire E Kim, lead author of the study published in the journal BMC Public Health, South Korea.
“We observed a potential gender difference between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome, with an association between metabolic syndrome and long sleep in women and metabolic syndrome and short sleep in men,” she said
However, Dr. Shireesh Sathe, a Senior City Cardiologist who spoke to Pune365 remarked that he had not come across any cases linking over-sleeping to a metabolic syndrome. Dr.Sathe was of the opinion however, that the lack of adequate sleep can be detrimental.
Sleeping less than seven hours a day can cause heart strokes and attacks in the long run.
“I had not in my weirdest dreams have thought that the world’s best thing- sleep can be harmful as well,” says Sudheer Nayak, a Bsc student.
And in weather like this, all you need is a fluffy blanket. I ideally sleep late at night but compensate during the day. The longest I have slept was for 12 hours at a stretch. I do realise that after sleeping though the day, I kind of feel drained for the rest of the day and then hyperactive at night. Yet, this has been my routine for the past 2 years,” he shares.
“I definitely sleep more than 8 hours, but try waking up by at least nine in the morning,” says Pratibha Mishra (26), a home maker.
Since I keep myself busy throughout the day with household chores, I feel the need to sleep a couple of hours extra.
Also, since I am the only one in the house, when I do not have much to do, an afternoon nap is what I cherish,” she adds.
A night owl, Megha prefers burning the midnight oil and then sleeping through the day.
In the past 5 years, I haven’t slept at night, since I prefer working at night. My sleep time is from 5 AM to 4 PM ideally.
Weekends and holidays are the worst, since my body clock cannot adjust to the ‘regular people’s routine’ and I end up not doing any productive work and often skipping sleep for more than 24 hours.”
