The life of Maulana Azad, in 20 scenes

Anjuman-e-Islam English Medium Girls School is all set to get a new building and as a fundraiser the educational trust is hosting a play on the life of the great leader, Maulana Azad. With legendary actor Tom Alter playing the role of the protagonist, the play focusses on the life of Maulana Azad and how he contributed to the Indian freedom struggle and educational development of the country. The saga of the life of Azad from his childhood till his old age has been shown in 20 scenes. The play evolves in the backdrop of Maulana Azad dictating notes to Humayun Kabir for his book. While talking about the book, which is largely political, the Maulana often digresses from the subject. As a result, he discusses at length an entire gamut of issues, largely apolitical – ranging from white jasmine tea to Tajmahal and the music of Mecca.
Presented as a soliloquy, events from Azad’s life will be beautifully narrated by Alter in the role of old Maulana Azad remembering the incidents of his life, including discussions on political and educational issues with Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel and also about their drawbacks, Gandhi’s Satyagraha and non-violent movement and during Independence, how this movement turned into Hindu-Muslim riots on a massive scale. While describing the saga of the Indo-Pak Partition. Azad says: “I don’t want to pay the price for Independence with Partition. However it’s unfortunate that Gandhi and Nehru couldn’t stop this historical tragedy”.
