There was no fairy-tale ending for Indian women at the World Cup 2017 at Lord’s tonight.
But they must be hailed for their magnificent performances in the tournament despite the close one at the final.

They have brought women’s cricket sharply into focus in a cricket-made country and their performances will surely inspire many more youngsters to take up cricket as a career.

Chasing 229 for victory on a cloudy day in London, India faltered after a magnificent innings from Punam Raut (86) and Harmanjeet Kaur (51).

India seemed to be in control for most of their chase before the lower order collapsed, triggered by a great spell by Anya Shrubsole (6-46).England kept their cool as India’s lower-order players panicked and handed the hosts their fourth World Cup.

India deserved a lot a credit for making it to the final. They started brilliantly, faltered in the middle and the picked up steam again at the crucial juncture..

The media only woke up late in the tournament to give these wonderful women their due.
They batted brilliantly throughout the tournament and bowled their hearts out. Their fielding was the only issue where they need to work harder at it.

Raut, Kaur, skipper Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana (in the early stages) and Jhulan Goswami set high standards which others emulated.

The Indian women can hold their heads high. They have brought pride and glory to the country and every effort must be made to encourage them further.
