Your Summer Diet – Do’s & Don’ts

Although Pune is known for its soothing climate, the summers here can be really harsh as we have seen over the past few weeks. The sweltering heat with exceedingly low atmospheric humidity saps you off all energy

This is where proper hydration and diet comes into play and that is when we decided to speak with Pune dietician Rohini Shende for her advice on what to incorporate and what to stay clear off, in our diets to beat this seething summer.

Enjoy :

Panna  (a beverage made of unripe mangoes with some jaggery in it): – This classic summer drink will freshen you up and give you an energy boost.

Salted Buttermilk: – This has a cooling effect on the body and will take care of your electrolyte balance as well. (Use pink or rock salt instead of refined salt).

Fruits: – Consume fruits that are high in water content and vitamin C. Fruits like watermelon, oranges, muskmelon and mangoes are great for the season. However, do keep the quantum of mangoes in check, for too much of it can cause acne and bad bowel movement.

Lemonade: – A bottle of homemade lemonade with some electrolyte powder is a must- have in summers when you’re stepping out. Add chia seeds to the beverage to make its cooling effect last.

Keep your Diet light. Consume more vegetarian sources of protein like sprouts and dal. This Will not only take care of your protein requirements but produce less heat in the body.

Avoid :

Fried Foods: – These foods are high in trans fats. As a result they increase, the heat production in the body and can even propel a foul temper.

Aerated Drinks: – A lesser known fact is that these drinks actually dehydrate you.

Chicken, Eggs, Meat: – These foods are responsible for soaring body heat. Thus, they are absolutely unsuitable for summers.

Tea and Coffee: – Reduce the consumption of tea and coffee since they hike the body temperature and also cause dehydration.
