Pune365MoodMeter: Time For Castration and Death Penalty For Rapists?

Death Penalty for Rapists

Every country across the globe has a strict legal policy and the punishments are clearly stated for the culprits. Not that rape and molestation have been curbed but many countries have managed to control it effectively. Meting out the severest punishment ranging from chemical castration to death, culprits and perpetrators are kept at bay out of sheer fear of being brought to justice in this manner.

After the Nirbhaya incident, the Parliament of India passed the Anti-rape Bill. Now, an act of rape can attract even life imprisonment and even death penalty in very extreme cases.

The larger question is whether this is enough or should we also be looking at really severe punishment like castration or even the death penalty, considering the rise of these crimes across the country.

Pune365 spoke to various citizens to get their pulse on this burning topic –

Parth Welankar: India should also resort to capital punishment when it comes to rape and molestation. As a matter of fact, it should be more brutal and ruthless as compared to other countries. However, unfortunately the legal system does not seem to be on the same page as of the other nations. If it were, they wouldn’t have sentenced rapists like Gurmeet Ram Rahim to only 20 years of imprisonment. It is sad to see that such rapists in our country do not fear the law. If one needs to stop rapes across the nation, it is essential to have a brutal law for the people guilty of rapes.

Neel Bhargava: I definitely am in favour of brutal punishments for the convict. However, punishment for not only rape and molestation but for all crimes against women should be as brutal as possible. This is because in today’s time, it is very important to empower our women. As Swami Vivekananda has said that no country can prosper if it cannot provide for the safety of women. Moreover, the brutal and harsher the punishment is, the more it will create fear in the mind of the offender trying to commit such an act.

Tejaswini Kharadey: When a person is raped, it leaves behind painful memories in the life of the victim. Just arresting rapists and putting them behind bars for some years is not enough. We are basically giving them a pass to be in the open to molest and rape some more innocent people of the society. Hence I feel India should also adapt to giving capital punishment for rape and molestation like other countries of the world.

Rohan Bishen: As the other countries lead by example in providing punishments as brutal as the act, India should also follow suit. However, in our country it appears to be a distant dream. Sadly, the politicians who talk about woman empowerment are busy playing the blame game. Unless we adopt stricter laws it is hard to stop such atrocious crimes.

Jawed Khan: To deal with such heinous crimes, fear of punishment is very important among the citizens. With growing rates of rapes in India, the call of the hour is to have serious punishments to send out the message loud and clear. So yes, brutal capital punishment should be imposed but more importantly, the punishment should be prompt. Ram Rahim Singh ‘Insane’ is going to jail for a crime he committed in 2002 i.e. fifteen years later. Justice delayed is justice denied !
