#Pune365MoodMeter: Is Social Media Creating Split Personalities Of Us?

Social media has proved to be a boon for those who are uncomfortable to speak their minds in person. It acts as a platform to showcase to the world what’s going on in their lives.

The urge to be perfect and show that they live in ‘La La Land’ has compelled them to create an artificial social ecosystem that is far beyond what they are in reality. For such people, it is offensive if anyone tries to trespass their boundary and soon will be ‘unfriended’ if found spilling mud.

The continuous struggle to promote ourselves as a brand has led to the pressure of maintaining two different personalities.

Pune365 is here again to check the pulse and gauge how social media pressurises to create split personalities, far beyond what is real.

Jawed‌ Khan: In my opinion everyone wants to put their best foot forward in social media so if I would have to say honestly, yes, I on some occasions do portray myself in a better way than what I actually am. Everybody does this at some point of time, unconsciously though. The problem starts when people pose as someone else. When this happens, it is actually evident that they are trying to be a ‘wannabe’ and it’s not their real personality.

Log on to Instagram and we can find a lot of people mentioning “public figure” in their bios, making videos and coming ‘live’ just like celebrities. Even their English accent reads fake and crass. This is more of a problem in teenagers and people in their early twenties because of immaturity, peer pressure and fear of being judged.

Radhika Parashar: Honestly, No. I do not feel the need to step into another skin for social media. But to be honest, I would say, socially I am a little exaggerated. Not fake, not false, just a little extra. People make fake accounts and live multiple lives online. Some do this out of curiosity, to explore or to just be mischievous. But people like me, we are just who we are, maybe with a flower crown filter.

Ankit Yadav: People who have a separate personality on social media are generally the ones with self-esteem issues or are more reclusive or introvert by nature. This happens because the internet works as a medium for them to express themselves, which they can’t in real life. Some of us feel like taking advantage, making the best out of not physically being present there and act pretentious and lie. Wanting to be perfect has nothing to do with social media; everyone tries to excel somewhere or the other. Like the saying, “Fake it till you make it”.

Poulami Das: Sometimes I do feel the pressure when I use social media. Now people are preferring to show-off their brands and amazing lifestyle in social sites which somehow starts a publicity race in our lives. The pressure to be perfect on various networking sites is present and growing.
