President awards Dr BC Roy Award to Dr KH Sancheti

President Pranab Mukherjee presented Padma Vibhushan Dr Kantilal H Sancheti with the prestigious Dr B C Roy National Award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday (July 1).

Presented in the memory of eminent scientist and social reformer Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the awards are presented to honour eminent medical men, statesmen, eminent persons in philosophy, science, art and literature.

Dr Kantilal H. Sancheti, 80, is an orthopaedic physician who invented India’s first indigenous knee implant, the Indus Knee, and founder of the Sancheti Hospital, the first dedicated orthopaedic specialty hospital in Maharashtra.

Awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri by the President, Dr Sancheti holds the academic degrees and fellowships of M.S. (Ortho), F.R.C.S (Edinburgh) U.K., Ph.D (Ortho), F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S. (USA). He has held the posts of Professor Emeritus in Orthopaedics, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sancheti Hospital & Centre for Joint Replacement Surgery, Pune. Director and Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation (SIOR), Chairman, Post Graduate Institute of Orthopaedics, Post Graduate Institute for Physiotherapy and Hospital Management. Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Governor of Maharashtra and Indian Armed Forces. He has headed and been a member of various academic and medical bodies.
