The lotus was blooming all over the city of Pune with saffron flowing like there is no tomorrow as the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Though it fell short of five seats (note) to gain an absolute majority in the 162-seat corporation, the Bharatiya Janata Part’s performance was hailed by citizens who were optimistic that the party would take its development agenda forward.

The BJP had finished fourth in the last elections in 2012 and has now staged a major comeback with a impressive vote of confidence for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) suffered a major setback, winning only 44 seats while the Congress finished with only 10.

The NCP and the Congress had dominated the civic body for 15 years. However, this time the voters seemed to have made them pay for poor governance over the years…

The Shiv Sena won 10 seats and may have just have a crucial voice in the proceedings In Pune. The party’s victory in the Bombay Municipal Corporation will only add to this strength.

The big question now will be whether Uddhav Thackeray will reconsider going with the BJP or make good his threat of withdrawing support at the state level.

A clearer picture will emerge once the dust settles on a keenly watched election..
