Eat It To Beat The Fear

A woman in the US came up with a novel idea to overcome her fear, says a report.

Kristin Barnaby, a self-described arachnophobe, found a way to get over what she dreads at a North Carolina burger joint, according to Reuters.

“I am going to eat my fear,” the 27-year-old said at the Bull City Burger and Brewery, where she tucked into a hamburger topped with a crunchy full-grown, oven-roasted tarantula and a side of fries.

The tarantula burger was a feature of the restaurant’s April exotic meat month, which in the past six years has featured iguana, alligator, camels, python, turtle and various insects. Tarantulas made their debut after restaurant owner Seth Gross read about how they have become a street food staple in Cambodia, where they are mixed with salt and sugar.

And what do tarantulas taste like?

“It reminded me of potato chips,” Barnaby said after washing down her first tarantula burger with a glass of water. “I like to eat weird food.”

You Can’t Worm Out Of This Burger

It may not be your choice but a supermarket came up with a unique filling for their burger, reveals a report.

Supermarket shoppers in the western German city of Aachen have stepped out of their comfort zone to sample insect burgers made of buffalo worms, says Reuters.

The worms, highly nutritious due to their high protein content, are the larvae of buffalo beetles and are bred in the Netherlands.

Served in rolls with lettuce, onions and tomatoes, they are being offered to customers at a supermarket in Aachen where they have just been added to the stock range after proving successful in the Netherlands and Belgium.

One passerby who tried one of the burgers, Manfred Roedder, said he believed they were a good alternative to meat, adding: “I had reservations at first but I got a second serving because it tasted so good.”

Man Fudges Up On Fajitas

You can’t eat your cake and have it too if a man in the US is to be believed, says a report.

A Texas man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for stealing $1.2 million worth of fajitas over nine years, says an Associated Press report.

Fifty-three-year-old Gilberto Escamilla was sentenced after pleading guilty to theft by a public servant. The Brownsville Herald reported that he told the court the fajita scheme spun out of control.

Escamilla had been intercepting fajitas that he ordered through the Cameron County juvenile centre where he worked and delivering them to his own customers.

His scam was uncovered when he missed work for a medical appointment and a 360-kg fajita delivery arrived at the centre, which doesn’t serve fajitas.

Escamilla was fired in August and arrested after authorities checked vendor invoices and obtained a search warrant that uncovered county-funded fajitas in his refrigerator.

Even Toppings Have A Price

Check the menu before you order cheese or chilli sauce to put over your dish, says a report.

A chef and food writer in the UK was shocked when she was charged 1.50 pounds (38 rupees) to have parmesan grated over her dinner in an independent Italian restaurant.

Rosie French tucked into a tagliatelle dish at Ombra Bar and Restaurant in Hackney, London, but was stunned when she saw a parmesan supplement on her bill, the Daily Mirror said.

She shared a photo of the receipt on social media and many other people, including food critic Jay Rayner, were also outraged.

Getting Married To A Chicken Curry

Sometimes to love of food can get so overpowering then you may contemplate marrying it, according to a report.

A restaurant in the UK is looking for the man who publicly declared his intentions to ‘marry’ its mango chicken curry, the Daily Mirror said.

Saffron Restaurant in Northampton wants to offer the customer the opportunity to wed the dish to cement his love.

The diner, known only as Luke, wrote an online review after visiting the restaurant. He said: “If I could marry this mango chicken I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

As a result, Saffron hopes to give Luke the opportunity to pop in and tie the knot. As a wedding present, Luke would be given an entire year’s worth of free takeaways.
