#OddlyAnimal: Meet Lawrence Of Abdoun, The Tomcat On Twitter And More…

Lawrence Of Abdoun - The Diplo-Cat

UK Names New Diplo-Cat to Jordan

A former rescue cat has been named as the chief mouser at the British Embassy in Jordan, says a report.

The fluffy black-and-white tomcat is named Lawrence of Abdoun, after the famous First World War British military officer T E Lawrence, according to Reuters.

Lawrence, according to his Twitter feed, reports directly to the Foreign Office’s Palmerston, another cat that delights his 57,000 followers with regular updates from the ministry in Whitehall via @DiploMog.

Apart from his mousing duties, he reaches out to followers on Twitter. Tweeting under the name @LawrenceDipCat, Lawrence has discovered the perils of social media, and has even been fat-shamed by trolls.

“He’s been a bit upset because some people have said he looked a bit fat in the last tweet he did, so he’ll be doing some exercises and posting to sort of rectify that situation,” an embassy official said.

Hedgehogs Go The Whole Hog

Ten overweight hedgehogs in Israel were ordered to go on strict diets and exercise regimes after they ate so much on the streets of Israel that they struggled to curl up into a ball to fend off predators, according to a report. Animal lovers found them waddling around and brought them into the hospital at Ramat Gan Zoo.

Hospital staff there said the hedgehogs had probably been snacking on food left out for other pets, Reuters said.

One hedgehog named Sherman was 1.6 kg when he arrived at the facility, almost double the average weight for a hedgehog his age. He has since lost 120 grams after staff monitored his diet and left him to run around an enclosure.

Horsing Around With A Drink

An American woman in Florida was caught by police for riding a horse down a busy highway while intoxicated, says a report.

Polk County police arrested 53-year-old Donna Byrne and charged her with drink driving after multiple drivers called 911 to report a woman on a horse was hoofing it down the highway, according to NBC News, quoting an AP report

Polk County Sheriff’s officials said that someone called 911 about a woman, who appeared confused and possibly in danger. When deputies arrived they found Byrne riding her horse on the road. Officers did a sobriety test and said she gave breath samples that registered blood alcohol level of .161 — much higher than Florida’s legal limit of 08.

Cat Does The Horse-Trot

Louis the Cat has a fondness for horse-riding – and he has found an able ally in Comet, a pony, says a report.

They may not be the most obvious equestrian duo but Comet and Louis go on treks together near their home in Devon, according to Metro.

A video footage shows the duo hanging out in the stables before Louis jumps on Comet and the pair head out for a walk. They can be seen on a leisurely stroll through woodland, crossing a bridge and splashing through a stream before making their way back home.

Biting The Bullet, The Armadillo Way

A man from East Texas was wounded after he fired a gun at an armadillo in his yard and the bullet ricocheted back to hit him in his face, it was reported.

The man went outside his home in Marietta, southwest of Texarkana, early in the morning and spotted the armadillo on his property and opened fire, police said, according to Reuters.

However, the animal’s hard shell deflected at least one of three bullets, which then struck the man’s jaw, he said. The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where his jaw was wired shut. The status of the animal was unknown.
