Now get a 360-degree tour of Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad Fort is more than a touristy destination. It’s Pune’s pride. And of course a major heritage symbol for Maharashtra. But not many have still been to the city, and some who wish to go there again, aren’t unable to do so because of constraints on time.

That could well be history, thanks to Digital Art VRe (DAVRe), a city-based Virtual Reality venture. The firm has captured a tour of the fort with multiple camera set-ups and stitched it together to form a 360° video. Through this, viewers can get completely immersed in the fort surroundings, while an informative history lesson plays in the background.

The video can be viewed using any device – Google Cardboard, Samsung VR Gear, the Oculus Rift etc. One can really feel as if one is walking the rocky terrain surrounding the fort. As the picture moves, viewers feel they are climbing up the steps all the way to the Kalyan Darwaza. And then, you could just turn around and take the scenic view in.

“The overall experience of documenting Sinhagad Fort was very enriching,” Ajay Parge, Director, Digital Art VRe. Rugwed Deshpande, also Director in the venture, hints at plans of covering more such monuments and heritage structures in and around Pune, all in 360° video. “If children and elders at home could get inspired by them and actually make plans to visit the real sites, we as a people could better appreciate these historical gems,” he noted, adding: “The virtual tours are not a substitute, but just another reason to go to the real place.”
