Meet Neeta Godambe’s Havanese Six Pack

It began with one dog – Jaanu who came to spend a few months with the Godambe family. By the time he left, Neeta Godambe was sure she wanted a dog.

Not any dog, but Jaanus breed – the Havanese. That was eight years ago. Now, Neeta has six! A canine trainer, pioneer in dog agility sessions and a complete fan of Havanese dogs, Neeta tells us about her six pack.

Recently, Neeta went out for a meal with her family. As they opened the car doors, one by one the silky fur small sized girls and boys jumped out of the car and walked in order to the restaurant. Traffic almost came to a stand still, people couldn’t stop cooing over their looks and their manners. Quite the crowd pullers, it was just another day in their life. Proud parent Neeta smiled, as always.

The First
Jaanu changed my life. He went back to his family when they came back from their holiday, but they got him back to us saying he was sad at home. By then I had Coffee (Imported, because I was in love with the Havanese breed). I couldn’t say no, so we welcomed him home.

I learned training because of Jaanu and here I am, she shares. Winners in various competitions, the process to register the Havanese as a breed in India was taxing for Neeta. It took a lot of convincing but we wanted them registered. Our efforts to register them with the KCI introduced the Havanese as a breed in India she adds.

The Ultimate Pack !

What a Six
The tiniest of the lot, Awesome, at three months, loves to get her paws wet and so at every opportunity, she runs to the terrace. The eldest, Jaanu wants a treat after finishing his meals. If I don’t pay attention, he stares at me or whines till I realise he wants something. Coffee is the alpha of the pack, the mother, the disciplinarian.

She doesnt like anybody having a good time. Maya is very accommodating and a follower of Coffee. The sprinter, Legacy, is a seriously wild runner. Rise idolises Jaanu.

The Breed
Known as velcro dogs or shadow dogs, they have separation anxiety and so need to be trained to stay by themselves. They thrive well with adults and children. They like praise and work hard for it. Athelete, competitor, excels at agility and tracking, the Havanese need exercise daily. Perfect pet for first timers, they pack a lot of personalty in a tiny body.

The Work
Giving them the right food, a lot of love and plenty of time is but essential. Though they are are known as non-shedding dogs, it just means that they don’t shed like other breeds do. Neeta adds, Grooming daily is a requirement for all long coats. Similarly for them. I prefer to keep the younger ones coats long and the older ones coat short – it is easier for the older ones that way.

The Love
The reward to have them home is by them just being there. I still want more. The silly fur and the warm deep eyes are too hard to resist smiles Neeta.
