Gaurav And Pratham- Alleviating A Girl’s Despair With Music

Gaurav and Pratham Compose an Ode to a Young Girl’s Struggle

No Indian is a stranger to the gruesome reality of rape and sexual assault  occurring in our midst. While each case has us reeling, Indians come together time and again, doing all we can, to demand justice and spread awareness.

Nevertheless, the shocking frequency of these cases instigated Pune-based music composers Gaurav Telang and Pratham Khadke to do their bit for the situation.

“Our concern came through the best possible way we knew – music,” the composers say in unison when probed about their song ‘Realize the Pain’.

Essentially a powerful performance that depicts a teen’s internal chaos, the music calls out to today’s pseudo modern society. The duo confesses that they initiated their research by meeting with rape survivors and sexual assault victims.

What they witnessed simply broke their heart.

“We wanted to better comprehend their struggle, but we were appalled at how young so many of the affected women were,” says Pratham.

“What really stuck with us was, how all of us were sympathizing, yet, not many really understood how they actually felt,” chips in Gaurav. “The girls were confused and could not understand why society would behave this way.

Their questions were so innocent, it was heart wrenching.”

While Pratham grew up listening to his father sing, a career in music and programming came naturally to him. Gaurav, on the other hand, credits his interest in music to being inspired by legends like Pandit Jasraj, Mohd. Rafi and even Bryan Adams. The Software Engineer turned Sound Engineer met his match in Pratham, leading to the two to composing together and creating inspired tunes.

Speaking about the song, Pratham Khadke explains, “We tried to take their emotions and capture them with ‘Realize the Pain’..

“It highlights the questions a young girl poses to the world she’s born into. Right from society’s impossible moral standards and hypocrisy to the judgement society passes on her every move. She innocently asks why no one sees her pain.

“So our song pleads to our society to shine the light of truth and equality. We had to wait until we found the perfect partner to produce the song.”

That’s when the composer duo came across JustLikeThatFilms. “They understood our concept and believed in our vision. They were in sync with us and gave us just the right platform to release our music,” beams Gaurav.

Choreographed by Pune’s very own Hrishikesh Pawar, the piece is performed by Maithily Sevekari. Realize the Pain expresses emotion with a contemporary dance routine that is truly entrancing..
