Yes, December 31st is going to be a very long night…
And more so for your dogs since you will be out to ring in the new year. So what will rocky do home alone?
Here’s a list of simple things you can do to make the long night easier for him and so for you too:
Exercise your dogs nicely before you go out. It works to keep them tired. They wont be destructive in your absence.
Should your dog want, she/he should be able to sit and stare out the window. Just like us they too enjoy looking out.
Serve a delicious meal so the wafting flavours will make your dog eat. A happy stomach, as we all know, is always welcome.
Get a kong and stuff some of your dog’s fav treats like cheese or peanut butter and your pooch will stay busy trying to get it out! You can stuff wet food and kibble in it and freeze it overnight too. Works like a charm.
Play soft music. Keep a light on.
Keep a warm bed in her/his secure place with a favourite toy on it and keep some treats for her/ him to “discover” there.
If your dog needs company, get a neighbour to pop in.
Try to organise get a play date with a dog that your dog is really comfy with, ideally with human supervision. That way both dogs are gainfully occupied and definitely not bored or anxious in your absence.
And last but not the least, don’t go out feeling guilty. Or, don’t let your dog know if you are feeling awful about it. He will get upset since he can sense your feelings. Don’t make any extra fuss, keep it simple and say the usual bye bye. Tell her/ him you will be back soon.
And you can enjoy the party!
