Feeding India: 18 Million Meals Served To Eradicate Hunger

Feeding India

Feeding India believes that globally, hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined…

In India, as many as 20 crore people go to sleep hungry every night. This equates to 194.6 million Indians suffering from hunger, the world’s highest number of undernourished people.

Feeding India was founded by Ankit Kawatra and Shrishti Jain. Ankit Kawatra, attended a grand wedding where there were 35+ cuisines being served. He wondered what would happen to so much food and decided to stay back. Ankit witnessed heaps of excess food being sent straight to the bin which could have fed 10,000+ people just that one night.

At 22, he quit his well-paying job and a growing career at an MNC to do something which he felt is more important- making India a hunger and food-waste free nation.

This mission and led the team from 2 people to the national movement it is now.

Feeding India is a not-for-profit social organisation which aims to solve the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the country. While speaking to Pune365, Shrishti Jain, Co-founder of Feeding India said. “We channelize extra nutritious food from individuals, weddings, restaurants, corporate offices to the people who really need it and have no means or access to food.”

Feeding India works with 8500+ volunteers in 65+ cities to collect and donate extra food and also runs employee staffed vans to ensure regular meals for beneficiaries, she added.

In a short span of time, Feeding India has served 18 million meals.

Feeding India

Currently, Feeding India is operating in 65+ cities including Pune city. We aim to end hunger, malnutrition and food wastage in India. A major portion of what we do is redistributing good extra food to people in need.

Jain further says, “Feeding India provide nutritious food to children, women and elderly who otherwise go hungry through our national projects such as Poshan to Paathshala, Magic Wheels, Hunger Hero, Happy Fridge and Emergency Relief Program. Our vision is to feed 100 million meals in 100 cities by 2020.”

Jain further says, “Donate Excess/ Fresh Food with Feeding India- Anyone can donate food with Feeding India by giving us a call on their helpline number 98711-78810. We have a Feeding India Magic Wheels Program under which their refrigerated vans go to the places and collect the food and then donate it to the nearest identified shelter home. We also ensure the quality of the food by checking it up, one before the pick-up and second before the donation.”

There are thousands of marginalized people in homeless shelters, orphanages, old age homes in urban cities who do not have enough food to eat and there is a massive amount of extra food that is thrown away every day. Rather than being thrown away, this extra food can be a meal for those in need, she added.

Donate Monetarily- An individual person can also help to serve nutritious meals to people in dire need by making donations on https://www.feedingindia.org/donate. You can donate any amount by your choice and feed a million mouths.

Set- up a Happy Fridge- You can also apply for Happy Fridge, which is another initiative taken by Feeding India to minimize food wastage in the society.
