The past few months has witnessed a lot of hue and cry on delayed and questionable judicial action on pertinent cases in our country. Citizens have been irked by the delays in convictions for heinous crimes of rape, murder and child abuse.

Yet, decisions like the approval of the ordinance like the death penalty for rapes of children below 12 seems have been welcomed by many.

Pune365 decided to gauge the macro sentiment of the citizens with respect to our lawmakers and the legal system that prevails in our country.

Col (Retd) Arun Joshi: The situation was always bad. It is just that now there is more media attention and dirt flying around.

Questionable judicial action has been prevalent for years and a lot of political appointments happened in the judiciary as well. The level of corruption happening at the lower levels is unimaginable.

As far as the current scenario is concerned, rapes, physical abuse and major crimes such have been rampantly carried out, yet there is no change in the legal implications of this over the years. In my opinion our legal system is deteriorating. Today, I believe in our legal system, but only to the point of getting stay orders.

Praveen Gupta, Accountant: I still believe that there is a ray of hope from the current government.

Not that the earlier governments haven’t done anything, but I believe that since the citizens have started speaking about the wrong doing and are more vigilant, the legal system is forced to listen to their pleas.

It is true that no earth shattering change has been witnessed, but yes, there has been a positive difference and the legal system in my opinion is working towards earning the faith of the citizens.

Hansraj Manik, an NGO worker: The legal system is the core of any area, city, state or country. Speaking on the current state of law in our city, it has certainly been problematic..

People are still seen breaking rules and incidents of kidnapping, harassment or even killing is witnessed. The entire system is too laid back and despite media attention and social media involvement, nothing much has been done on the ground. .

I personally do not see anything changing anytime now and hence, can only hope for positive change.

Sharmila Purohit, Designer and Businesswoman: People are losing respect for even the highest court of justice. A person is called for hearing of his case 20 years later, by which time everyone would have forgotten the relevance of the case.

Is this how the judiciary should work? We need to sacrifice several woman and children before any stringent law is passed in our country to safeguard their interests.

We need to fight the government even to protect our own privacy and today, any post on social media opposing anyone or anything can get you arrested. Our law makers and legal system certainly need serious looking into.
