Doctor, How can one prepare for menopause ?

Dear Doctor, I am 45 now and have heard menopause is very tough and depressing. How can one prepare themselves for menopause?

Most women are concerned about the changes they would experience as they go through menopause.

It is important to understand that Menopause is a natural part of ageing.

Knowing what to expect & preparing in advance can help you manage this phase in life. You could do a general body check up including hormonal levels and a Thyroid Function T.est in the ‘perimenopausal’ period.

Keep a check on your weight by adopting a healthy life style with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Build up your bones with adequate amount of calcium, Vitamin D. Eat lots of Fruits and Vegetables and do regular weight bearing exercises.

You could cut down on smoking if you smoke, or better still stop completely.

Enjoy a stress free transition from ‘perimenopause’ to menopause.

How effective is the DMPA shot for birth control? Will it affect my body adversely in terms of weight gain and emotional stability ?

DMPA is a long acting, reversible hormonal contraceptive birth control drug that is injected every 3 months.

It is very efficacious & safe.

It may lead to weight gain &  depression due to hormonal changes in a few women. These possible side effect if presented, can be controlled by regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Does getting a tubectomy have any adverse effects?

Tubectomy is a safe method of permanent sterilisation in females.

Few women may suffer from transitional side effects like ‘perimenopause’ like symptoms, irregular or heavy menstrual periods, changes in sex hormones, reduced interest in sex etc

However, as i mentioned these are transient & would eventually ease off with time.
Dr, You had mentioned using menstrual cups being one of the best and most hygienic methods but this is not available anywhere. Would you be able to guide us on where we can get these cups. Medical shops have not even heard of them in Pune.

Yes i realise that menstrual cups are good to use during menses but there is a problem of availability in india and in Pune, unlike the easy availability in western countries.

You can try buying them online till the supply is improved.
