Our travel destination for this week is the serene and tranquil Tarkarli, set deep in the south of Maharashtra.

A fishing village in the Malvan Taluka, Tarkali is an amazing example of an unspoilt locale that welcomes you with open arms…

Situated 8 km south of Malvan, Tarkarli is an picturesque tourist destination with coral beaches; the magical confluence of Karli river with Arabian sea, this locale has fortresses, lively night markets, water sports, huge stretches of natural beautiful beaches.

For the foodie in you, theres great seafood that will make you return for more every few months.

Tarkali can be reached by road through Pune, taking you through Kolhapur-Gaganbavda-Malvan and on to Tarkarli. There are enough rail, air and road routes one can choose from if you are travelling from other cities. .

Taking an early morning ride on a ‘balance boat’ from Tarkarli will transport you to some amazing places in the vicinity. The Devbaug beach is adjacent to Tarkarli beach offering a pristine and scenic view that meets at the Devbaug Sangam- the confluence of Karli river with Arabian sea that changes colour at the meeting point.

In the open backwaters of the Karli River, you can spot the family of playful bottle nose dolphins that live here. Keep that camera ready, for these shy dolphins don’t give you much time. A pretty houseboat tour at this river is relaxing and worth indulging in.

Tsunami Island

The Seagull and Tsunami Island have amazing stories to enthral you. Seagull Island has a broad expanse of off-white shore thanks to the nesting seagulls.

The Tsunami Island on the other hand gives you the feel of walking on water. Justifying its name, it is a serene, soft sand island which mysteriously appeared after the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. One can easily spot the sea bed through the crystal-clear waters offering you a view upto a depth of 20ft. With tall ‘shuru’ trees in the background and the setting sun, it is easy to spot the golden rocks from a distance that glow with the glow of the sunlight.

Suvarna Ganesh in Malvan

Waves of the sea will ferry the boat to the next spot, the Sindhudurg Fort, built in 1664. The fort is a classic master piece built under the close supervision of  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Is occupies an area of around 50 acres marking its territory with huge walls. Housing an entire village with a temple then, the fort now has crumbling bastions and is a nesting spot for birds and seagulls. It is still fascinating to see, how this fort that looks dilapidated from the outside, still carries the memories of early civilization.

While returning from Sindhudurg Fort towards Malvan, stop at the Suvarna Ganpati Temple and pay homage to the idol of elephant God that is carved from gold.

Your trip isn’t complete without trying the Malvani delicacies made using coconut, rice and fish, the prime ingredients in Malavani cuisine.
