ASM-IBM in key tie-up

Pune-based ASM Group of Institutes has signed a deal with IBM to help its students to learn about Big Data and business analytics, a report said.

The institute has set up an IBM Business Analytics Lab for its Career Education Programme. Faculty members and students will be trained in skills related to business analytics tools and techniques to analyse and predict data.

Performance appraisal

Many Indian firms are making tough appraisals of their employees in a bid to weed out underperformers, experts say, according to a report.

Companies are taking this tough stance as the workplace has become dynamic and highly competitive now, they say. This comes in the wake of Wipro’s dismissal of over 500 people after a tough appraisal.  Such actions will be taken by most sectors in the future, the experts feel.

IPL a big draw

At least 32 per cent of total advertisements aired during the first 15 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches are from mobile makers and cellular service companies, according to a report.

Chinese brands Vivo and Oppo’s advertising during the IPL hit 20 per cent while Vodafone India and Jio Infocomm accounted for almost all of the 12 per cent advert share of mobile service providers, according to a study.

Custom duty on phones

India is planning to impose customs duty on high-end mobile phones in a bid to encourage local manufacturing, a report said.

This will happen after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime begins. The electronics and information technology ministry is studying the issue and has sought legal opinion.

Bonuses blow

Major IT companies missed their targets last year and this has reflected in reduced performance bonuses for executives, according to a report.

Chief executives from Infosys, Genpact and Cognizant among others had their performance bonuses cut as the entire IT sector struggled for growth. The companies said they needed to be compensated for the lower targets achieved by their CEOs.

Lower increments

Mobile phone operators will reduce their increments to staff this year as stiff competition hits their revenue and profitability, says a report.

The firms are expected to cut the increments to an average 7.5 per cent from an average 8.4pc last year, the report from consultancy firm Aon Hewitt says. The firms also face additional pressure Jio and the need to consolidate to increase profitability.

Expansion eyed

IDFC Bank is planning to double the number of branches to increase profitability over the next three years, its CEO revealed.

Rajiv Lall said the bank is also seeking to increase its retail bank book, reduce dependence on infrastructure to boost profit growth, according to a report.

Beer battle

United Breweries has launched a new beer, Kingfisher Storm, to take on its rival Carlsberg which has made steady gains in the market.

The new strong brew will compete with Carlsberg Elephant, Tuborg Strong and Tuborg Classic after it is introduced all over India over the next 18 months, a report says.
