As per the Maharashtra Public Universities Bill, 2016, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will be holding senate elections on Sunday, November 19 between 10 am to 5pm at Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts.

“There will be 58 voting centres and 113 voting booths spread around the three districts. A search engine on the website as well as an SMS service has been set up for voters to know details about their booths,” states SPPU registrar, Dr Arvind Shaligram, while addressing the media.

He further mentions that there are 49,761 registered voters for the senate elections. There will be one booth for every 600 or more voters. There are six seats under the management representatives and ten seats for registered graduates. All the nominations were filed by November 2.

“For the ten seats of registered graduates, there are 37 candidates standing from different categories of general and reserved. From the open category, there are five seats for the open category which have 19 candidates. In the reserved category for women there is one seat with three candidates contesting. The SC category has six candidates for one seat and the ST category has two candidates for one seat. For women in the same category, there are three candidates for one seat. For the denotified tribes and nomadic tribes (DT/NT) category there are five candidates for one seat.”

The Registrar also added that this year, the voting will be in a preferential format. “Voters will be given the list of candidates for the position who will be numbered. They will have to put the number of the candidate in the ballot paper according to their preference and not in words of the candidates’ name. The numerical can be written in English or Marathi.”

There will be 14 staff members trained to inspect the voting at all the booths. One Commissioner will be present in every district. In Pune, the elections will take place in the classroom complex at SPPU. In Ahmednagar, it will be held at Pemraj Sarda College, and in Nashik at HPT College.

The scrutiny and counting of the votes will take place on November 27.
